Description

An epic, richly inventive, historically sweeping, magical romance. When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels...

It is honestly, see when you get a few chapters into it, it does grip you. When I originally bought it I didnt realise it was a part of a trilogy so when it was coming close to the end I was how is this going to wrap up, thinking it was going to be a disastrous end to the book as there just didnt seem like there were enough pages to conclude the story, so glad I was wrong!!! Hope you get it anyways :)

This book is one of my favorites, so much so that I could not bear to put it down while reading. Deborah Harkness's writing is fantastic. Cannot wait until I can get a hold of the next installment to 'a discovery of witches'.

I absolutely loved this book. It took a couple chapters to get into (1or2), but she does it with SO much detail that you feel like your actually there. I belive the second book comes out early 2012 or in november of that year. I get book dates mixed up. Counting the days!

I really loved this book. Yes, it took a while to get into, but once in, I couldn't put it down. Love the amount of detail Deborah goes into, the landscape, the library, the chateau... I could really imagine I was there with Diana. Can't wait for the next book.

Finished this book today 4/20/11. It was a good, not great, read. It took me awhile to get into it but once the story started to pick up momentum it was hard to put down. It appears this is the 1st in a series as the end just leaves you hanging. Interesting storyline.

It's perhaps inevitable that Deborah Harkness' new fantasy saga will be sold as "Twilight for adults", a more grown-up version of the endlessly popular supernatural romance for teens. Yawn. That's not doing it justice AT ALL though.

I ordered my copy pretty much on the recommendation of a friend. When I first saw A Discovery of Witches I admit my heart dropped a little - this book is quite a tome at 600 pages and I thought it would take me forever to plough my way throug... more

Few novels have me wanting to see a feature film made from them but this, in light of all the vampire lust out there, absolutely must be made into a movie! Her writing style is unbelievable. A bit daunted by the size in the beginning, now I wish it never ended. I will read this novel again, something I've never done and can now understand why some do. Ms. Harkness thank you for a wonderful holiday!

This creative first book of a trilogy is filled with magic, romance and plenty of historical realism. It’s about a witch, a vampire and a sorcerer’s manuscript which links their destiny. The story starts when Dr Diana Bishop, an academic historian, accidently reads a bewitched manuscript of alchemy while studying in the centuries-old Oxford library. Since she comes from a long line of witches, Diana knows exactly what it is, takes a quick peek than replaces the volume. Unfortunately this sets off a chain reaction in the underworld of witches, vampires and ghouls because this book is a highly prized volume which has been lost for centuries. And Diana is the key to unlocking its spell. She is an intelligent young woman and teams up with geneticist Professor Matthew Clairmont, a vampire who can feel the evil gathering at Oxford, although initially their personalities clash. Steadily their bond deepens and Diana finds herself drawn to him. Even if their relationship defies forbidden laws. Ultimately her supernatural adventures lead her to a greater understanding of the world of creatures, her family and herself. A good fact-mixed-with-fantasy read despite its length of 579 pages!
