Description

Animal Farm, by George Orwell - Akasha Classics, AkashaPublishing.Com - Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the henhouses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side, he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last glass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs. Jones was already snoring. As soon as the light in the bedroom went out there was a stirring and a fluttering all through the farm buildings. Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals. It had been agreed that they should all meet in the big barn as soon as Mr. Jones was safely out of the way. Old Major (so he was always called, though the name under which he had been exhibited was Willingdon Beauty) was so highly regarded on the farm that everyone was quite ready to lose an hour s sleep in order to hear what he had to say.

‘Animal Farm’ is truly an interesting story; we all know what the story represents but George Orwell portrayed communists Russia in World War II really well. The book was short and I was able to read it in one day, almost in one sitting. I think we could spend a long time discussing which animal represents which Russian and working out which battle was The Battle of the Cowshed or The Battle of the Windmill. I did especially enjoy the flag (The Horn and Hoof Flag reminiscent of the hammer and sickle), Squealer (propaganda pig) and Moses the Raven (the Russian Orthodox Church). It is definitely one of those books you need to read at least once in your lifetime. I think I enjoyed it more than ‘Nineteen Eighty Four’.

I have just finished reading Animal Farm and loved it.

The overall story is of animals being neglected and abused by their master Jones and his men, and deciding to take over the farm with the endevour to work as equals to create a better and prosperous life for themselves. without the selfish cruelty suffered at the hands of human beings. Symbolically, I know the story is based on the Russian Revolution of 1917, with Manor Farm being allegorical of Russia, Old Major as Karl Marx with Snowball ... more

I read this one night and liked it, so I read it to my six year old son before bedtime... he liked the story more than my rants about politics...HA

Don't you think George Orwell had a good imagination rather than a good grip on world politics?

micmcclean@hotmail.com commented:

I think George Orwell had both. He was clearly more comfortable with his imagination, but he had a good grasp of the latter too.

Ugh I'm a noob at this. My mom forced me to look online and read this book instead of taking her lazy ass to the library around the corner and checking it out for me. I'm confused. Help?

I tihnk you're kind of stupid. I got this at the library and it looks great.. but of course here youe are: "I hate this damn book!!!" Excesive exclamation points -_- Anyway, you didn't even explain why it was bad, and how the author could've improved it. So, thanks, becase I'm sure the world will ignore your warnings, read it and love it- just like me.

One of the best books ever written. This book will be enjoyable even to those with no understanding of the October Revolution.

For a while I hesitated to read this book. Not because of the huge number of pages, but because I thought it would be difficult to write about what I think of it.I've therefor decided to write my toughts about what I read, the story itself and leave aside the comparison to people / the book's contemporary politics. I do not have enough knowlegde of that to let my commentary make any sense. (I must admit though, that while reading, visions came up from the founding of the USSR.)As a story I loved this little book. Obiously this is done on purpose, but the mini society the animals form after the Rebellion resembles more and more the 'normal' human society, where there are people taking the lead, people following blindly without criticizing a thing. There are smart people and not so smart people. What I loved most, is that that the change from 'idealistic' society to a dictatorship is so fluently. It almost naturally follows from the actions taken.Despite it was written in the last years of WW II, this satire / fable is still very actual. I'm glad that I finally read it :-)

ohh, those pigs are crafty! Set on a farm in rural England, where the animals are incited to revolt against their human masters and start to run the farm themselves. The inital dream of a rural idyll is soon eroded by the actions of the pigs, and they way the confound the other animals. They invent 7 commandments that are seen to change over time as the pigs decide to rewrite the rules in their own favour. The lies that they tell to pull the wool over the eyes of the other animals get more and more outlandish as the story progresses, to the extent of writing history to prove their point. I thought this would be difficutl to read, but it's actually quite short, about 100 pages, and isn't taxing. However, I imagine the essay that you could be set on this are probably a great deal more difficult than the source text!

This is truly an amazing book!I love how the story throughout the book is a metaphor for the rising of communism at the time. The way in which it is written is great! For the reason that it is actually a children's book, and it has to be written... more
