Caldecott Medal
About the award
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the 'the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children' that has been published in the previous year. The winner must be a citizen or resident of the United States. The winner receives the prestigious bronze medal which is engraved with the winner's name and the date.
The judges for the Medal are the same as those for the Newbery Medal, an award for the most distinguished American children's book. If a book is nominated for both the Caldecott and the Newbery Medal, the judges determine which category is most suitable as texts cannot be considered for both awards. Judges review all nominations and select a winner and 'honor books' - other texts they believe are worthy of a mention.
Judges make their decision based on; excellence of execution of artistic technique, pictorial interpretation of the story, appropriateness of style of illustration, delineation of plot, theme, characters, setting, mood or information and the recognition of the child audience.
