Man Booker Prize
About the award
The Man Booker Prize is awarded annually to a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland for the best book of the year. The award is £50,000 in prize money and both the winner and the shortlisted authors are almost guaranteed international success.
The judges are a mixture of the country's top critics, writers and academics which helps to ensure the excellent quality of the winning text. The judges compile a longlist of twelve or thirteen books. This is then narrowed to a shortlist of six texts, the authors of which each receive a cash prize of £2,500 and a hand bound copy of their book. A winner is chosen from this shortlist and is announced in October.
As one of the most prestigious literary awards worldwide, the Prize aims to promote excellence in written works. The shortlisted and winning titles are ones which have the potential for international success due to their high quality of writing and are representative of the very best literary works published in the previous year.
