Have you tried the Jenny Cooper series of novels by M R Hall? The main character is a fascinating woman plagued by personal crises whilst trying to hold down the job of district coroner. The first three are out in paperback and I found them real page turners!

There are so many Agatha Christie books and they're all so good - you need to meet Hercule Poirot her other famous detective - I've read them all - several times over the years - I can't really say I have a favorite
