Description

Susanna Clarke's novel is an epic tale of nineteenth-century England and the two magicians who emerge to change its history. In the year 1806, in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, most people believe magic to have long since disappeared from England -- until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers and becomes a celebrity overnight. Another practising magician emerges: the young and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's pupil and the two join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic and soon he risks sacrificing not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything else he holds dear.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke is one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time. It’s a hefty tome and somewhat daunting at first, I could definitely see how some would find it dry. Personally, I liked the history and the building of the story, which served to immerse you completely in Jonathan Strange and Gilbert Norrell’s world. My only regret in reading this book is that I chose to do so during the holidays and had very little time to really sit and read. At best... more

Just collected my copy from the library and you're right, Halo, it is quite a "hefty tome" but it has a lovely olde worlde charm and authenticity reminiscent of bygone journals. At present, I'm only up to Chapter Two so will check back in about three months!

This book is very dry to start with and builds tension very slowly, but the increasing excitement mirrors the growth of magic in England. I loved the slow progression of the plot and I loved the characters.

I really liked the interaction between the magicians and historical figures of the time - Duke of Wellington, Lord Byron and George III. I also liked the use of magic to defeat Napoleon.

In all a very enjoyable and well written book.

Interesting - bawhahaha! That is one serious understatement.

You have to love Clarke's descriptions of Byron and her comparison of him being Mr. Drawlight( a character who is a nasty little piece of work) - only frightfully clever. It is in lines like this, where Clarke really impresses the bibliophile in me, her references to great works and their authors are a definite lovely spice in the flow of her novel.

I've never read a book like this, but I'm absolutely hooked! It's like Charles Dickens meets Edgar Allen Poe. The characters in it are relly believable. If you like books that are set in the nineteenth century then make sure you read this!

If you are a fan of history and English Magick then this is the book for you. The blurb in the description says it all really, but I just have to add that the Magick in the book, as practiced and described, is totally believable. It's a massive great tome and will keep you entertained for hours. Easily one of my top ten books of the last decade.
