On a freezing January morning in 1961, eight-year-old Anna's mother disappears into the fog. That same morning, a spy case breaks in the news. Obsessed by stories of espionage, Anna's brother Peter begins to construct a theory that their mother, a refugee from eastern Germany, was an undercover spy and might even still be alive. As life returns to normal, Anna struggles to sort fact from fantasy. Did her mother have a secret life? And how do you know who a person was once she is dead?
Does everyone finish a book once they start or do you give up when it is truly boring?? I am really struggling with The Spy Game but I keep trying cus i always think that no matter how boring it is it may suddeny twist into a brilliant story.
I generally try to finish them but some books are just too hard. I don't think it's worth forcing yourself to read something you don't enjoy as it just means it will take you longer to be able to read something you do enjoy.
If I get bored enough and its not getting any better..Then yes, I'll quit and go on to something else...It makes me mad when I get 3-4 chapters in and have to quit b/c I feel like I've wasted my time..Usually it'll start getting boring in the 2nd chapter and I try to give it an extra chapter or two to see if it picks up
I once bought Ice Station by Matt Reilly, an airport novel, I figured it would fill in the 9 hours from Sydney to Hong Kong, it's the only book I had to give up on after about 3 hours of grim determination, it is utter rubbish, I spent the remainder of the flight staring at the seat in front of me, which was much more enjoyable, there was no way it was going to suddenly twist into a brilliant story
There's not enough time in life for any of us to read all the excellent books out there. I learnt that if an author couldn't grab you on the first page then they weren't that good. It's taken me a lifetime to NOT finish a book, but reading IS one of life's pleasures.
when i was a teenager i used to make a point of sticking with a book until the bitter end. then cam the realisation that life is too short for bad books. and the book i have to thank for that? "Interview With the Vampire" by Anne Rice
its not a book but the movie the illusionist is an example of y i always finish throughout the movie its pointles and boring but at the very end theres a twis and if ur quick enough to catch it it makes u rethink the whole thing
Sometimes I've had to push myself with films, and given up after watching over an hour - two examples are Heart Of Darkness, and Portrait of a Lady. Now I have my very own 30 minute rule, and give up after that; sometimes 20 minutes. With books it's the 50 page rule, but so far I haven't given up on a book yet.
so far I've only given up on one book although there have been a few that I probably should have given up as they started badly and didn't improve, i think in those cases i was just hpoing that they were slow starters.
As for movies, if it is a dvd then it has 30mins max to draw me in if it is at the cinema then I usually think I've paid to watch this so I will stay to the end. TV shows get until the first set of adverts, if they haven't got me by then they never will.
Is it coincidence that with the invention of the internet and the ability to have facts and data accessible at the touch of a button that human beings are losing the disciplines of perseverance, determination, concentration and focus?
I'd say it has more to do with people having more choice so they don't have to watch or read something that isn't grabbing their interest, there is also the fact that a lot of what is being produced now is complete and utter rubbish.
I often feel too guilty to give up on a book ... but then I look at all the books I own, and my 'to be read next' shelf in particular and agree, life's too short for bad books!!
i will give up on a book if i really cant get into it, atho the one i'm reading just now, when i first started it i gave up because i couldnt get in to it but i'm really enjoying it now, so maybe try it again in a few weeks and see how you get on
Yes, I just went thought that with a book called "Amandine"...I gave up after about 1/4 of the way though the pace just didn't pick up...I figure it should have hooked me by then instead of me wanting to throw it across the room!
I always finish a book once I start it. I feel like some books it takes longer to get into it. Sometimes I am disappointed, but I don't like not finishing a book.
If I am struggling with a book I give it up for short while then try again. After 50 pages if I am not taken with it I quit. There are so many good books to be read
why force yourself when you can move on to another?
I was interested to see your comment. It's funny isn't it. I too try really hard to finish once I've started. Not sure why, on principle perhaps! One that stands out in my memory, not sure how I forced myself to the end, was Dickens' Little Nell. Boy was I relieved when I finished it.
But I just LOVE Dickens... The English old-fashioned language, the description of each character... and I love to think of each chapter being awaited across England and delivered on horseback!!
Have you ever read the classics The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley or Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett? They were also written in 'old English'. Wonderful stories!
