Description

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Why did I bother, I know SK does this all the time; it's like he has a good idea then doesn't know how to finish it off. A really good read spoiled by the ending

I am not a Steven King fan. A friend told me I should read this. It was exciting and I couldn't put it down. Then I got to the end, what a disappointment! Never again!

Excellent book, really good read and the second half of it was also a really quick, couldn't put down read.

The story isn't really about the dome but about the people trapped under it. There are a full range of characters and they were fairly realistic, as were their actions. As the story progresses you get the full range of human behaviour from those who give up all the way to those who will try and take advantage of the situation to increase their power and control over other people.

Yes I have to agree with you Pezter I did not like the monster either, I always thought awww It was going good up until seeing that. But to put that aside. I find it a brilliant film. I have a lot of Stephen King book movies, and I have a lot of his books that I will get round to reading someday I am sure.

I haven't completed it yet, but i really wanna buy the other too other new books, well one is out soon. He really is an amazing writer even as he ages, which is the problem with the writer James Herbert.

Pezter, when did the movie come out?

I'm going to read Pet Cemetary And Desperation plus Geralds game soon, they're apprently the scariest books he's written.

Still in the reading process and wish I hadn't read "Friend of Dorothy's" comment. I am only hoping I can find the discovery a little more enticing. I have heard this is very close to early Stephen King, my favorite of his being "The Stand".

I'm still reading this, and going to avoid Friend of Dorothy's comments until I've finished as I don't want to ruin the ending. I'm a little bit disappointed so far. It's definatley King and its interesting but there is something I can't quite put my finger on that I'm not getting.

I have just started reading this book and, as with most of King's books, I was sucked in on the very first page. I'm only about 25 pages into it and so far I love it...we'll see how it goes...

I agree with other readers' thoughts on the ending - weak and disappointing, almost as though King was trying to meet a publishing deadline. What kept me going was the quality of his writing, which never falters. He builds such strong characters and someimes you're not sure whether you want to love or hate them! A good read but I still have to say that 'Needful Things' comes in at number one on my list followed very closely by 'Duma Key'.

I stayed up late and got up early to finish this book and was totally sucked in on the first page. King had so many people to love and about as many or more to hate. I loved the first 800-900 pages but when I started to see where the ending was going I was disappointed to put it mildly. It was too easy, lame or something we have all seen or read before. I could not believe that King, the master of story telling, could not come up with a better ending, AND after investing the time to read almost 1100 pages I deserved a better ending. If you go into this book knowing what to expect maybe you won't be so disappointed but at least you have been warned. Just stop when they start to tie things up and develop your own ending, that will work.

I forgot to rate the book but I would give it a 4 for the first 900 pages and zip for the ending!

As with most of Kings epic books, I found this one hard to put down, his development of multiple characters is without peer. Now for the "BUT". I have to honestly say, I was somewhat let down at the disapointing, simple, silly "secret things" discovery at the end. I am not a writer, nor worthy critic, but I can think of a dozen endings that would have left me feeling more satisfied. I have every book King has written and will Always grab his new ones. A side note: I think the Gunslinger was the best series I have ever read. hint hint
