Description

Jill Ruspoli is moving forward with her life after a devastating divorce. Her work as a doctor is hectic but fulfilling, she's newly engaged to a kind and loving medical researcher, and her daughter is finally happy again and doing well in school, in the aftermath of losing her stepfather in the divorce. But when Jill's distraught ex-stepdaughter Abby shows up on her doorstep with the news of her ex-husband's death from an apparent overdose, her life is thrust into turmoil once again. Abby believes her father was murdered and pleads with Jill to help her explore the circumstances of her father's death. Jill can't turn her back on Abby, even though helping her threatens to rip apart the fabric of her new family, destroy her hard-earned stability, and sacrifice her future for her past. Along the way Jill learns that motherhood transcends mere biological and legal ties and requires only the power of the human heart.

I received an advance copy of Come home from TheReadingRoom.com and St. Martin's Press to read and review. I really enjoyed reading this book and felt bummed out when it ended. I really enjoyed the character Jill and felt that she was easy to relate to (being a mother of two myself). It was a well written story. Plenty of times felt like I knew what was going to happen next, I really had no clue. I was really rooting for Jill and Victoria to reconnect throughout the whole story and up to the end, I was rooting their relationship on. It ended well and thoroughly explained all the mysterious parts of the book that were unanswered. My only disappointment was hoping there would be some sort of epilogue that would flash forward and show how the characters were all doing 10 years from now and how they were as a "whole family".

In this world of blended families, the meaning of "mother" is changing. Where does your role end when the second family breaks up. I know for me, even 12 after my divorce, when the phone rings in the middle of the night and I hear "Mom," that's who I become. We may not solving murders, but we can feel the emotion of this book.
