Description

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. "A strange and original work of art".--New York Times Book Review.

I thought it dragged on too long and could've been shorter. Loved the juxtapositioning of good and evil throughout the story, almost like a case study.

The blurb is misinformed--it's not really about the intertwined destinies of two families. There's hardly any intertwining at all.

In my personal opinion, this is Steinbeck's finest work. The way in which he writes his characters on such a personal level and makes them so unique, is a skill I rarely see today. Just a beautiful story.

What a stunning book, I have never felt so connected to the characters, that I actually grieved for them when they died. OK that was a bit OTT. But after having read sub-standard modern books, it felt so good to read something written with such talent and passion. No words can really describe it.
