Good to see another person reading books by Drusilla Modjeska. You review sounds very much like what I felt like about this book although ultimately I think I rated it a bit higher than you did. I think it is a kind of the book that really demands a fair amount of attention but once you really get into it there seem to be so many layers and undertones to it: the biblical names, the history of this remote land, the clash between the new and the old... in fact this might be the biggest problem of this book.... there is just so much in it.
