Description

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtues Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is, she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris, and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together, they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes-fascinating, sometimes-exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret: one she's kept hidden from everyone, because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly-perfect society, she also learns that her secret might be what helps her save those she loves . . . or it might be what destroys her.

So, there you have it: DIVERGENT

there are plenty of good ones like legend by marie lu. it has that dystopian effect. if you like fantasy romance, then you may like the hush hush saga by becca fitzpatrick, shiver trilogy by maggie stiefvater, the gathering(forgot the author), and matched trilogy

The Hunger Games, if you haven't read it...

Oh my God. I just finished it and my expression was like: uihyfwekjfhsdkjn

I NEED THE NEXT BOOK.

For some reason, I am a little attracted to Peter because of my "amazing" guessing skills that he was going to be the love interest. Though most of my guesses were pretty accurate so it was a little predictable. But overall, I loved it. I need the next book!

Hi all! I am about halfway through Divergent and am dying to talk about my thoughts on it. Has anyone else been drawing parallels to real life? For instance- these young adolescents have to decide their entire future at such a young age, and failure to choose the "correct" path leaves them kind of in limbo (the factionless). This book has really got my wheels spinning. Anyone else?

eileen.p commented:

Oh this book is soooo good! you should definitely continue reading. And the second one only gets better!! The ending to Insurgent(the sequel) was particularly moving.XD

Hi ladies! Hope you're enjoying our latest read. I haven't exactly set a reading pace so you're all welcome to read through as quickly as you'd like. I'm about a third of the way into the book. :) So here's my food for thought for the week. Imagine yourself as a character in the book. What faction do you think you would have been born into? Think of your childhood and family dynamic. Would you have chosen to stick with this same faction at your choosing ceremony or one of the others? Why? Here's a faction refresher for your reference. http://divergentfandom.net/fandom-pit/divergent-factions/

EvSan commented:

Jess, I totally see Candor for some of our family!! LMAO! I spent most of my youth trying to figure out how to "keep the peace with" people, so I think i would have been born into Amity (but would have counted the days til my 16th birthday!!). I probably would have chosen Erudite as my faction because I crave knowledge. I also have this annoying habit of always having to get to the bottom of things. Dauntless sounds cool cause of the tattoos & piercings though. ;)

I'm way behind ladies.....need to catch up before I can answer this question. It's a really good question Evy!

I have a term for books that I am so into I stop for nothing. Not food, nor sleep, nor anything else. These books are my cereal-for-dinner books – the ones where I don’t even want to take a break for a decent meal but rather I just pour a bowl of whatever I have on hand and some milk and keep on reading. Last night was a weet-bix kind of night.

At the age of 16, everyone must undergo an aptitude test to determine which faction of society they are best fitted to and then choose where they will spend the rest of their lives. Faction before Family.

When Beatrice Prior undergoes the test which decides which faction she is best suited to, there is an anomaly with her results. She is “divergent” – not a perfect fit into any one of the five factions but rather equally suited to three; Dauntless – the dare devils who protect everyone from the horrors outside the city limits, Erudite – the book smart people who think the answer to everything is knowledge AND Abnegation – the people Beatrice grew up with who are selfless above all else.

Beatrice has more to think about than most when deciding which faction to dedicate her life to. Does she go with the Abnegations – and live the life she’s been brought up with but never truly feeling like she belongs? Or does she take a chance and abandon her family?

There are a lot of plot twists and turns in this novel. There are so many things that I wasn’t expecting (and a few that I was) but overall I think what I enjoyed most about this book was that it was different. It’s set in a post-apocolyptic dystopian world and for many people, they will see many similarities with The Hunger Games. But I found there to be enough differences to be throughly entertained.

Beatrice (aka. Tris) is a fantastic heroine. She’s more than what she seems. Her transformation from an Abnegation child to a Dauntless inductee was fascinating to read about. I did have a few problems with her (I can’t believe some of the things she does or more disturbingly, the way she feels about some things) but I think I’m hard to please and had she been less hard and a little softer I’d have been disappointed too. Four is my favourite character. He’s fascinating. I had an inkling about who he was and what his former faction was a long time before it was revealed but still enjoyed the journey. I liked how his relationship with Tris progressed.

It’s a good think that there’s only a few weeks till the sequel comes out. I’m impatient to find out what happens next. This book was fantastic. I recommend it to anyone who likes teen fiction that’s not romance centric, likes dystopia stories and isn’t scared off by a bit of violence.

So I just finished Divergent and it is really good. I didn't think this book would be THAT good, but it was amazing! at some parts, in my opinion, it was a little dry but those are minor flaws. What did you guys think of it (if you've read it)? Great book! I will be picking up Insurgent ASAP!

This book was so good, and even though it's a dystopian future it was still fresh and new! I guess you can't do an average dystopia. I so cannot wait until the next one, Insurgent, and the Movie! I cannot wait, it would be so good! As long as M. Night Shamalan doesn't do it.

I actually rarely have time to sit down and read, but I'm still a book-aholic. I saw this on my library's website, and downloaded the audio-book. Finished it very quickly, considering. It was wonderful! Great story line, great characters, amazing scene setting - I felt like I was actually in the Dauntless compound, at times. Kept me on my toes right up until the end. DEFINITELY recommend this book!

I have read an extract of this book and i cant wiat to read it

In divergent there is more freedom cause they can choose which fraction they want to be in however in hunger games there are no choices i liked this book cause it was different cause in the couple of Dystopian novels i have read are all the same.

snaffles commented:

so true. It is indeed different from other dystopia out there. Though some are as good as this book. butyes definitely different plot.

I loved it! I work at Borders and after finishing it I asked my boss if I could start up a YA Book Club and he said yes! If anyone lives in San Francisco and wants to join, we're going to be talking all about Divergent and playing this awesome trivia-based board game I'm designing for us all to play! It will be June 20th at 3:00pm at the San Francisco Borders store in the Stonestown Mall. See you there!

I loved this book so much, but I had to check it out from the library since I don't even have a quarter in my wallet, so I'm super bummed that I can't buy myself a copy. This world stayed with me long after I finished reading. I can't wait for the sequel and I'm stoked to have a chance to win a copy.

Abnegation: The Selfless

Erudite: The Intelligent These are the 5 Factions

Candor: The Honest that society has created

Amity: The Peaceful to keep the peace.

Dauntless: The Brave

Beatrice Prior (Tris), at 16 years old, must decide how she will live the rest of her life. The Aptitude Test is administered to every member of society in their 16th year. In theory it will tell you which of the 5 factions you would be best suited for and the happiest in.

After choosing her Faction, Tris must undergo iniation before she can be accepted as a member of that Faction. During the initiation process Tris discovers more about herself than she ever thought possible. The process is brutal and involves both physical and emotional tests of fealty to the faction. She must not fail.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I loved this book. I followed Tris into her faction of choice and felt her physical pain with every word that I read. I cried everytime she cried. I recognized all of the choices and decisions that Tris made as ones that I could very well have made for myself had I been in her shoes. I felt the strength and the weaknesses that she carried on her shoulders as she went through iniation. I ached to be loved and accepted as Tris did on her journey to discover who she really was and where she really belonged.

The descriptive writing style of Veronica Roth kept me holding my breath from page to page with my thumb nail suffering from the emotional roller coaster ride that I was on. I couldn't read it fast enough or take it in well enough to feel satisified until I got to the very end. Once I finished, I was relieved and charged full of energy so I picked up the book and opened to the title page and started it again.

If you love Dystopian stories, you will fall to pieces in love and pain with Divergent. Go get it now. Start with the title page and experience it for yourself. Tris and her story will not be easily forgotten!

Divergent was once of the best books I've ever read. (which is saying a lot since i read A LOT of books) I assumed that this book would be one of those books that revolve around mindless action, or too much action that it overpowers the story, but it was amazing! Divergent delves deep within the human mind and its conscious, the true human nature, and that is often depicted by the main character, Tris, who is imperfect in almost every way, but she is strong, she makes mistakes, she can be ruthless and cruel, she can be weak at times, and she gets confused just like every human being on the planet. Veronica Roth created an extremely realistic character, she makes Tris seem so believable. The story was well crafted and well thought up. It was refreshing and original, nothing cliche. I definitely wasn't disappointed.

Dystopian societies are a popular framework for many great new novels. Check out Carrie Harris' and Bethany Wiggins' review on Veronica Roth's 'Divergent' and Megan Miranda's notes on 'Blood Red Road' by Moira Young. Carrie wrote, 'If the mark of a good dystopian is that it makes you think about the world differently, then DIVERGENT did it for me.' What are everyone else's thoughts on dystopian thrillers?

...

Twitter commented:

I find dystopian thrillers interesting, like utopian novels they highlight truths about society which otherwise we mightn't have noticed but the way they do this is more sinister.

CorrineJackson rated this book

This book is 496 pages of awesome. Tris is not a perfect heroine who falls for a perfect brooding hero who saves her in the nick of time because she’s too silly to possibly think for herself. She has faults, often acts impulsively, and doesn’t always trust the right people. Her actions get her into trouble, from which she must frequently save herself. Smart and funny, she has the ability to think on her feet, and she is constantly thinking and wondering about her place in society.

And her society is not as simple as its founders and leaders would have everyone believe. The factions laud five virtuous traits, but they fail to take into account our baser human motivations of greed and ambition. Watching Tris navigate this imperfect landscape becomes a fascinating journey as you draw parallels with our own society. As she questioned the imperfections of the Erudite or the Abnegation, I found myself questioning manifestations of those groups in our world, like Scientists or particular religions.

This novel is smart. It has layers of complexity that will leave you thinking about it for days. As if that’s not enough, it also has brilliant action and a hot romance. Pick this up. Read it. Veronica Roth is going to wow you and leave you breathless for a sequel.
