Description

'What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions stormcloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do?' Just how well can you ever know the person you love? This is the question that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what did really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was left in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war...

New York Times bestselling novelist Gillian Flynn talks with Google Play about her newest book, Gone Girl--and why marriage can sometimes be as much as a mystery as murder.

This is the first book I've read by Gillian Flynn & it was great right up until the very end where it seemed to just fall off a cliff into nothingness. I was so disappointed! I was hoping for a happy, vengeful ending, but any ending would have been something. It left me with my mouth open thinking, "But what happens now!"

annaTRR commented:

Funny how what one reader does not like the other one really likes. I thought that the ending of this book was fantastic! It let me go on for weeks thinking about what could possibly happen next... but also it made me think that there might be another book coming at one point and if it is written the way this one is than I would say "bring it on"

I don't understand the huge popularity of this book. Yes, it is extraordinarily well-written, narrated by the 2 main characters with absolute control of voice by Flynn. It is also one of the most deeply chilling, disturbing books I have ever read, if not the most. The ending reveals profound evil so horrific that it makes Hannibal Lecter look like a chubby-cheeked choir boy. Not gory, mind, just pure, largely unexplained evil. Predictable is the last word I'd use - perfectly plotted, yes, with some small details near the beginning come full circle to tie everything up at the end. This is a book that will keep you up at night -- not to find out what happens next but it is grounded in one of the darkest views of human nature I for one have encountered.

I am 75% finished reading this book. It kept me wanting to stay up late and read- just one more chapter. Of course it made it hard to get up in the mornings. Definitely a reccomendation.

The characters were really well-done -- brilliantly so -- but the plot was predictable. Most of the people I talked to said it was a great book, kept them up, on the edge of their seats, etc. I disagreed.

I'm not going to do anything different than what so many others did to me. Just read it. It's in the form of a diary of a young woman then in the present tense of a man. Twisted!

Totally boring and not worth my time with all the great authors out there like Sarah Jio. Hard to get into, I kept reading about 100 pages and returned it to the library.

I was enjoying this book more and more. Got to the middle and thought WOW! This book is awesome. All went downhill after that. By the time I got to the end I felt like I just watched a cheesy Lifetime movie. The last 50-100 pages were way too drawn out and not interesting.

Scary books for Halloween
Halloween is almost here, are you ready? We have been thinking about some great scary books that we read this year: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn would definitely come up high on our reading list. What recent scary book would you give to another reader?

I did not like this book as much as some others did. It started slow, then got interesting, then really interesting, then...nothing. Like several others, this book took me a while to get into the story. It really dragged. Then the second part was more interesting. How she ended up fleshing the wife Amy's character was the most interesting part of the book.

I was very disappointed with the end of the book. I kept looking for another chapter or entry into the diary or something. I totally dislike books that don't end. I gave this 3 stars because of the middle. The beginning and the end were not great.

This is an adult book, although Young Adult could probably read it too, there is no physical violence in it.

I did like this book, but part one dragged for me, took me weeks to get through it, normally takes me 3days to a week to finish a book. But once i hit part 2 that was it did the rest in one sitting.

I think the first part dragged on so much was because i didnt care, i didnt care about the charaters, i didnt care about what happened at all.

But once we got in the second part is where it took an interesting turn, i sort of had a feeling about what was going on i was right, but the way it was done was fasntastic and very clever.

The end was fab as well, I didnt think it would end like that I thought it would follow the flow but it took another turn for me.

I just wish I stuck out the first part and got through it quicker i would of enjoyed it more but because it took so long to read i still have a feeling it dragged alot.

I received this book yesterday and read it in one sitting. It is horrifyingly creepy, but not in a Stephen King way...the only monsters are people. I find it difficult to read books about the evil that resides within, but this one was well-written and kept me, unwillingly, until the blood-curdling end. Told in multiple first-person POV (which I dislike, but I keep seeing it in new books and it seems to be a trend in 2012), Ms. Flynn manages not to alienate the reader. After all, who wants to hear the self-serving rationalizations of bad, possibly psychopathic, people? The plot, according to the back cover, is that Amy disappears on the morning of her sixth wedding anniversary to Nick. But that isn't the real story. The real story is about a complicated symbiotic relationship that has gone astray, and the increasingly nasty things its members do to get it back. It also has a cliff-hanger of an ending, leaving the reader with the certain knowledge that there's more to come - not a book sequel, but you're left with several possibilities and each is more frightening than the last. It makes you think about the ties that bind couples, and what people really get out of their relationships. This novel is not for the faint-hearted. You won't see radioactive monsters, sinister aliens or demons from hell, but you will see monstrous, alien, demonic humans, and that's bad enough.

Julie Piazza commented:

I'm not sure how to read them on here. I get the actual books. Sorry

I finished Gone Girl last weekend, but it still has a grip... Keep thinking about the characters, the deceptions (on many levels); it is dark & thought provoking. A straightforward (seemingly) plot---handsome husband bored with wealthy, socialite wife who turns up missing...heard it before?? Not like this! I've read & loved Gillian Flynn's other novels, but this is my favorite!

Read-It-Forward

GONE GIRL has reached the number 1 on the New York Times bestsellers list. Read a sample chapter. Have you read it yet, what did you think?

Wow – what a ride! This book is like accidentally walking into one of those mechanical car washes. First you get pummeled from all sides, knocked over by jets of icy water and dragged along by chains – and just when you can see the exit and think you are safe at last, the big roller flattens you!

The story starts innocently enough. Nick wakes on the morning of his 5th wedding anniversary to the smell of his wife’s cooking. Loving, sweet. But things soon turn South. Amy disappears in suspicious circumstances, and Nick must not only find out what happened to her but also defend himself against allegations that he had something to do with his wife’s disappearance. As Nick tells his side of the story, the reader gets to know Amy through excerpts from her diary, from the moment she first fell in love with Nick until the days just before her disappearance. At this point, lulled into a false feeling of security by these seemingly mundane marital issues, you better fasten your seat belt!

This is a masterfully crafted and very disturbing psychological thriller where nothing is quite as it seems, and evil takes on many shapes and forms. As different aspects of Amy’s and Nick’s marriage are revealed, the story turns from the ordinary to the sinister. I agree with other reviewers that it is extremely difficult to comment on this story without giving anything away, so all I will say here is that this was one of the most intricately constructed plots I have read in a long time. To say that I found the ending deeply troubling would be an understatement, and anyone who has read this book will know what I mean.

Written with insight into the issues of a marriage between two people with very different backgrounds and values, the book also explores the deepest, darkest and most disturbing places of the human psyche gone wrong. Do not be put off by the seemingly slow beginning – but instead see it as the slow and gentle ascent to a terrifying roller coaster ride to follow. I could not put the book down and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller.

Clever clever clever. What a dark, devious and delightful book to read. Gone Girl just sucks you in; the two alternating voices from chapter to chapter - married couple Amy and Nick are beautifully written to perfect effect that you find yourself  immersed in a relationship you sometimes wish you weren't. Amy and Nick feel very real, their marriage and all that goes with it feels so very real, and so very confronting.  In one chapter you are agreeing with one character , loving and laughing with him/her and feeling the total opposite for the other, only to have author Gillian Flynn flip your emotions over and over, again and again. So clever. And while you think you've figured out early what was the likely plot... Ha, well,  you haven't.  The second half is oh, so twisted and your emotions manipulated right to the very end.  To write anything here about the plot would spoil it. This is a must read book; a real experience.  What an amazing mind and talent has Gillian Flynn. In fact one of the quotes in the book could sum up her and her writing : " She is f...ing brilliant.  Her brain is so busy , it never works on just one level."  (BTW, Love to know what her husband thought of it! )

10% into Gone Girl and so far I'm enjoying it. Witty writing. Laughed out lo.ad at a few of Amy's diary entries. Gripping so far.

I know it is only July and there are still a few months of great books to come (including mysteries from such great names as Louise Penny, Jo Nesbo or Ian Rankin) but I feel pretty safe to say that Gone Girl in most likelihood will be my favourite mystery of the year. This is a fantastic read with an awesome combination of wit, great character development, 'edge of your seat' tension, and razor sharp prose. Gone Girl will take you on a trip full of surprises, where nothing will turn out as expected, and nobody will be quite who they seem to be.

What are you reading this weekend?
We are reading Gone Girl, if you are looking for a great mystery this one will not disappoint. It is creepy, it is scary, it is very believable and it is a real page turner!

I have no idea how to review this book without inadvertently revealing something that will spoil it for a reader, so it may be the shortest review I have written in a while.

After a slightly slow start I was gripped by this chilling, tangled tale of love, hate and revenge. The plot is complex yet startlingly simple on reflection. The twists are incredible, lulled into believing one thing, I actually drew in a breath of shock each time Flynn flipped the direction of the story on its head. Flynn plays brilliantly on our own prejudices about class, marriage, money, domestic violence and infidelity and delves deeply into the psyche of two ordinary yet shocking personalities.

Just as I thought I had a handle on the characters of Amy and Nick, I would be side swiped by a revelation I hadn't considered. What you think you know about these people, their marriage, their life can never be relied on. Guilt and blame is assigned and then shifted and it isn't until the end you have any idea where you stand, and even then...

Brilliant and disturbing in equal measure Gone Girl is an engrossing read, don't be fooled by the brevity of this review - I just don't want to spoil anything for you! Gone Girl won't be for everyone, but I found it simply astonishing.
