Creating Your Profile
Your profile is the way you present yourself to the book community, as well as help the site tailor the information it presents to you. You can modify your profile and privacy settings at any time by clicking "Edit Details".
By clicking the checkboxes beside your information, you can make each element of your Personal Details visible to the corresponding group:
- Public - visible to everyone
- Friends - visible only to Registered Members of thereadingroom.com you have marked as Friends; or
- Private - not visible to any other users of thereadingroom.com

Once you have edited your details, click "submit" to ensure they are updated. Your Username and Country location are visible to all users at all times.
Currently Reading
By entering what you are currently reading, The Reading Room is able to tailor the books, reading groups, and other Members it shows you. It also enables other users of the site to see what you are currently reading. You can set waht you are currently reading on the home page.
Your Bookshelf
The section titled Your Bookshelf is an automatically generated statistical summary of the books you have added to your bookshelf, and shows how many books you have rated or described in another way. This information will change as you make changes to your bookshelf.
Your Community
Your Community is an automatically generated summary of your activity on the site. This information will change as you undertake other activity around the site.
Your Profile Tabs
Once you have become a Member a range of tabs will appear on your profile page. You may click on each tab to view the associated information.
Settings
Your Recommendations
You may further tailor the recommendations the site provides to you by telling us the categories of books you are interested in. We will endeavor to only recommend you books from the categories you select.
Automatically add books to my bookshelf
When you rate a book, it is automatically added to your bookshelf. If you prefer that only books rated above a certain number of stars are added, you can select the minimum rating you must give a book for it to be added to your bookshelf here. If you would prefer that books are not added to your bookshelf when rated at all, simply unselect the checkbox on the left.
Messages
Messages and updates are a quick way to contact other Members of the site. They are private, only seen by you and the recipient of the message. You can view your messages by clicking on your message count at the top of the page, or by clicking on the messages tab in Your Profile. To send a message, click Compose, type in the name of the recipient, and select them from the resulting list. Enter a subject for your message, then enter the content of your message, and when you're finished, click the send button underneath the content area.
Deleted Messages
When you delete a message, it is put into your deleted messages folder. Messages in the deleted messages folder are kept for three months, after which they will no longer be available. If you delete a message from the Deleted Messages folder, it will be removed permanently.
Blocked Users
We encourage Members to act courteously and respect other user's wishes at all times. However, if you wish to block a user from contacting you on the site, you can click on the Block User section in your inbox and click on Add to block a user from contacting you. You can block a user from sending Messages, Friend Requests and Reading Group invites. If you come across a user who is in breach of the terms and conditions of the site, please notify admin@thereadingroom.com immediately.
Friends
You can invite a Member to be your Friend by typing their username in the "Add a Friend" textbox. You can also invite a Member to be a friend from their Profile, or anywhere you see their Member summary, such as in the list of Like-Minded readers on the home page. You can also search for users in the main search box at the top of the page. When you invite a user to be your friend an invitation will automatically be sent to their Messages Inbox. They can accept, reject or ignore your invitation. If a Member accepts your invitation you will be notified by message, and a summary of their profile will be accessible under Friends in your Profile.
Reading Groups
A summary of each Reading Group you belong to will be listed under the Reading Groups tab. You may join a Reading Group from the Reading Groups tab in the main navigation menu.
Tracked Authors
If you would like to find out when an author publishes a new work, you can track that author by clicking on the Track Author icon (shown as an eye) beside their name on their author profile page. A list of all the authors you have elected to track can be viewed here. You can stop tracking an author by clicking on the Remove button to the far right of the author's name in your list of tracked authors.
Terms and Conditions
When you become a Member of The Reading Room you must agree to the Terms and Conditions that outline the way in which you can use the site. You must agree to abide by these Terms and Conditions at all times when using the site. Please take the time to read them before you become a Member.
