Description

At last - another brilliant, original and moving novel from the author of "The Time Traveler's Wife". Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical 'mirror' twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them her flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin ...but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twins' mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat...With Highgate Cemetery itself a character and echoes of Henry James and Charles Dickens, "Her Fearful Symmetry" is a delicious and deadly twenty-first-century ghost story about Niffenegger's familiar themes of love, loss and identity.
It is certain to cement her standing as one of the most singular and remarkable novelists of our time.

I loved the story - it made me want to read her Time Travveller's Wife - which I didn't get too far into before having to return it to the library. All the characters grow and develop! Excellent premise.

I am currently a little over half way through this book. I find it to be very drawn out ... and not very attention grasping. I am struggling to get through to the end ... but I will do so as I am already devoted to it. Over all though ... not that great.

The writing was great but the story was awful. The aunt was merely a greedy selfish woman in life and her death. Each character was merely outdoing each other in the extremes of owing someone else.

I absolutely loved The Time Travelers Wife but I really didn't like this, I gave it one star but only because I was feeling generous. The story was disappointing and the characters were horrible.

I took this book on holiday and couldn't put it down. Was completely unsociable until I'd finished it!

I LOVED Niffenegger's first book. This one was a big disappointment. All of the characters were completely self involved with nothing likeable about them. In the end I came away with just one word - horrible!

Wow this is another haunting book by Ms Niffenegger. The ideas in the book stayed with me as I began reading my next novel and I kept thinking the main characters in that book were twins not just sisters! Shows how involved I became in Her Fearful Symmetry.

I desperately want to visit Highgate Cemetery too. Ms N really detailed it well and 'brought it to life' - 'scuse pun!!
