Description

Controversial and compelling, "In Cold Blood" reconstructs the murder in 1959 of a Kansas farmer, his wife and children. Truman Capote's comprehensive study of the killings and subsequent investigation explores the circumstances surrounding this terrible crime and the effect it had on those involved. At the centre of his study are the amoral young killers Perry Smith and Dick Hickcock, who, vividly drawn by Capote, are shown to be reprehensible, yet entirely and frighteningly human. The book that made Capote's name, "In Cold Blood" is a seminal work of modern prose, a remarkable synthesis of journalistic skill and powerfully evocative narrative.

I read this book when I was 11 or 12 and it scared me to death. I think it may have been the first book about real criminals. The fact that the family was killed and how they were killed has left a lasting impression. To date and it's 40 years on, I have not re-read the book. Scared me!

I don’t think this is a book that you could easily forget and it seems to get into your head quite a lot. I found Capote’s style of writing very easy reading – I can find these “classic fiction” reads can sometimes be a bit heavy on the hyperbole at times, but he was great and pretty straight forward. I felt there were times where the story drifted a little, but it was such an interesting read that you could live with that. I’ve seen most of the movie, so I had an idea of what to expect, but the senselessness of it all is what makes it all so horrible, as well as the actions themselves. I’d definitely recommend this to read.
