Yippee! said my cousin when he received a copy of Jasper Fforde's latest book The Song Of The Quarkbeast. It's the second YA book of a magical trilogy featuring Jennifer Strange and Tiger Prawns who appear to have their work cut out for them again, keeping the wizards and sorcerers of Kazam under control within Zambini Towers in the mighty Kingdom of Snodd. Plenty of supernatural highjinks and lots of laughs. I just love the names of the characters, Miss Boolean Smith, Ann Shard (very brittle character), Jimmy Nuttjob and Lady Mawgon. A very imaginative book and not as contorted as his "grown-up" novels starring Thursday Next who works inside books as a literary detective. Grab a copy of The Eyre Affair and read through to One Of Our Thursdays Is Missing for superlative characters, mind-twisting literary-based plots and inventive inventions. If that sounds too daunting, try his Nursery Crimes series. A new look at old characters like Humpty Dumpty in The Big Over Easy. Certainly not mainstream reading but unique books by a unique author. Treat yourself to something different!
