Description

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here, one of whom was his own grandfather, were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow impossible though it seems they may still be alive.

The concept of this book is intriguing -- the author seems to have plotted the story using vintage photos, which are scattered throughout the book. It's clever, and the book is a quick read, but certainly not for anyone over, say, twelve or thirteen. For an adult it's entirely too predictable and the characters aren't nearly developed enough. In fact, I don't think it's even terribly good children's/YA literature. For a wonderful book in the same vein, I'd stick to Madeleine L'Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME or THE WIND AT THE DOOR.

This novel has two quite distinctive parts. I would have gladly given the first half of the story 5 stars, as I was totally captured by its haunting atmosphere, mystery and intrigue as the main character goes in search of information regarding his murdered grandfather's mysterious past. The assortment of dark and troubling pictures only added to the suspense, and I expected the rest of the book to continue as a haunting gothic ghost story. However, the second half of the novel adopts a sort of Harry Potter-ish style with tales of parallel universes, time travel, characters with unique abilities and monstrous villains who seek to rule the world. Although I enjoyed this foray into fantasy, I was also a bit disappointed that the story did not live up to its original haunting atmosphere, but was at times stretching credibility a bit too far and losing its original intrigue in the process. The cliffhanger ending, obviously making room for a sequel, was also unexpected and a bit of a let-down. But overall a very original and imaginative story! I totally loved the weird photos - it is worth noting that this book would be better read in hard copy than electronic format, as the pictures and hand written letters were quite hard to make out on my e-reader, and they are the best part of the book!

Read this book for my book club. I was hesitant to read it but loved it.l agree the ending was not as dark as the beginning. The pictures made the story believable and unique.

I enjoyed this book, but expected more. Not at all challenging, great potential that wasn't quite met. I felt it lacked a certain something. Got off to a great start, promised a dark, troubling journey but didn't deliver. For a book that begins with the brutal death of someone so close to our hero's heart, I couldn't help but feel the ending was a little limp. All our characters were protected from harm so well, I think the writer became too attached to her own creations and was unwilling to give the book the climax it deserved. Other than that, well researched, the pictures were a great touch. Either a one off from a semi good author or an rough talent in need of a little polish. Only time will tell

Stumbled across the book by accident while browsing online for potential reads. Wonderful read (it's a dark, teen-fantasy), and I love the vintage photographs feature throughout the book! Adds a great sense to the realism. I must say, I can't wait for the sequel!
