I found the characters a bit predictable/irritating but having said that I recognised them so were true to life . Hoping to enjoy the film more . I agree with Kim - a fan of Ann Hathaway in Rachel's getting married .

Just brought One Day, and I'm still skeptical about it because of all the reviews from it saying how good it is. But I don't know?

What do you think??

Easy to read and you probably won't regret reading it. However, you will notice it mentions Nicholls' work on Cold Feet (the TV series).

In the TV series, there's a bright girl who falls in love with a slightly dim ladeez man, who is only redeemed when the girl is squished in a road traffic accident.

In the book, there's a bright girl who falls in love with a slightly dim ladeez man, who is only redeemed when the girl is squished in a road traffic accident. Erm...does he have any other stories?

Although I Have Not Read It My Daughter And Son Lillian And Liam Grassed And Said That They Knew What It Was All About Because Their Teacher Told Them ( Which I Doubt ) I Mean I Knew They Were Laughing And Anyway What Teacher Would Read Such A Adult Book To Children? Typical,Just Typical!

I loved the whole concept of the story, of following two people's lives from their early twenties to middle age and exploring their relationship. The characters really came to life and were easy to relate to, and I couldn't put the book down. But what's with the kick-in-the-guts ending???? Found the last part of the book really hard to read, as there really was no point any more and it left me feeling a bit empty and disappointed. Still a great read though.

What a lovely book. I could not put it down. The characters live on in your head long after the last page has been turned. Read and enjoy.

An easy read. Enjoyed it but didn't blow me away like it seems to have so many. I did like it though.

I had very mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I found it a little difficult to get into in the very beginning but then found it a fluid read up until close to the end of the book. I really didn't care for the ending, not because of what happened, although a bit obvious, but because I felt it lacked a connection. I am happy I read it and probably will see movie because I always enjoy seeing the differences from book to film.

I've just read a great review of the film, though they did point out if you have read the book, you'll want more, but since I loved Ann Hathaway in Rachel's Getting Married, I'll put it on my movie list.

FIlm or book? Always a dilemma!

Totally agree, Lady Luck. It's often a shock too when the cast is nothing like you imagined the characters! What is remarkable is that each of us, readers that is, imagines something just a little different - same words, same author. This is what is so special about reading. We visualize a world described by someone else and each of us interprets it slightly differently. Then when we get together we compare notes finding the commons ground and debating the not so common. understanding. Which of course makes it all the more worthwhile. Authors must be more than amused.

"One Day" is a fast paced read; a real page turner to say the least. Readers will love the story of Dexter and Emma, and become enraptured with the highs and lows of their relationship.

*POTENTIAL SPOILER*

I found the last part of the book mortifying in that it did not end the way I wanted it to, but in this sense it makes the book more realistic- life does not always have a happy ending, perhaps. This is the first time I can consciously recall gasping and cursing aloud in utter shock at a turn of events in a novel.

I absolutely loved this book! I found it difficult to put down as I was swept along for the ride with Dexter and Emma - the highs, the lows, the sad times, the joyous times all were simply magnificant! Keep the tissues handy - A must read for every book lover out there.

This book took me completely by surprise. I really loved it! It is involving in the fact that you get to know and like both characters as they live their lives around the other, both having deep feelings for each other.

Its funny, sad, romantic and nostalgic as it spans 20 years. I would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone.

Have just finished 'One Day' by David Nicholls. An interesting twist on 'the relationship novel', each chapter covers the events during one particular calendar date in the lives of the two characters. So it covers how their friendship evolves from when they graduated university in their early twenties to early middle age. Well done and very readable.

A good read that is easy to get swept up in and doesn't require much thought. Not sure I'd categorise it as Literary Fiction but Nicholls is a skilful writer who creates sharply drawn characters that the reader feels compelled to know what happens next. Liked where the nocel took me towards the end - I had feared that it was going to be a predictable conclusion. Thankfully, it wasn't.

I finished 'One Day' last night and was very sad to do so. Nicholls captures the complex web of human relationships very sensitively and you really do feel as though 'Em and Dex' are real. Initially chosen as a break from crime fiction it turned out to be one of the best books I've read for a long time. Just starting 'Kavalier & Clay' now by Michael Chabon.
