The case that brings him back is already closed. There is no room for doubt: the young junkie was shot dead by a fellow addict. The police don't want him back...Denied permission to reopen the investigation, Harry strikes out on his own. Beneath the city's eerie tranquillity, he discovers a trail of violence and mysterious disappearances seemingly unnoticed by the police. At every turn Harry is faced with a conspiracy of silence. The criminals don't want him back...Harry is not the only one who is interested in the case. From the moment he steps off the plane, someone is watching his every move and tracing his every call. Someone wants him silenced.

Everybody has been talking about Jo Nesbo so I thought it was about time I give it a try and I was not disappointed. This is an intelligent, multi-layer and multi dimensional story that really engages the reader. Harry Mole belongs to the same class of detectives as Kurt Wallander or inspector Rebus, they are brilliant but also quite complicated and self destructive... well... I guess they are very human. The Scandinavian setting once again works really well, the clean, organized and wealthy country is a perfect set up for all sorts of darkness, corruption and pure evil. Nesbo takes the reader on a wild ride, narrated by a few characters, each with their own version of the story and each leading us to some conclusion only to be dispelled by the next narration. It all makes perfect sense but it also asks the reader to pay attention. Overall it is a very satisfying read that will leave you wanting to discovered not only what happens next, but also what happened in the past.

I am not a huge crime fiction reader but when it is done well it is a great entertainment, and there really is something special about Scandinavian and Scottish crime writers :-) and probably some others that I have nto discovered yet.
