Description

Berlin 1942
When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.
But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

I really enjoyed reading this book as a class novel study. The author portrayed Bruno’s character extremely well as a naive little boy. His use of flashbacks was phenomenal adding description and explanation to many of his cliff-hangers that he also used very well. When I first started reading the book, the first thing that came into my mind was “why am I reading this in grade seven” as it seemed to be a very easy piece of literature. It wasn’t until I got to the middle when I was trying to yell at him, telling him how awesome or stupid he was at each chapter. It was especially touching for me in the end when Bruno told Shmuel how he was the best friend he could ever have right before they were gassed. I thought about all of the innocent lives taken away by the Holocaust, hoping that something like this would never, ever, happen again.

I watched this movie and to be truthful i know i just couldn't read the book once is enough ,the books i read are more for me to try and understand the folly of men and the men who participate in such deeds.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas-C. Book Review

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is about a 9 year old German kid named Bruno who is living in Berlin, Germany during the time period of World War 2. His family is rich and is well off and his father is an important Nazi German military soldier. They move from their house in Berlin to Out-With (Auschwitz), Poland. Auschwitz at the time was the largest Nazi concentration camp and housed hundreds of thousands of Jews. One day Bruno after weeks of boredom, decides to explore the fence, where he meets a Jewish child name Shmuel. This day forever changes his life.

I will start my book review by saying that this book was a good book and I would recommend reading it to anyone that is 10+. I did very much enjoy reading this book, though since we were doing school work on the book we could only read a chapter or two at a time, and almost all of the chapters ended in cliffhangers so it was tempting to read on because of the suspense sometimes but I overcame temptation. The novel wasn’t very well-written, though that was made up by an amazing plot, great character development/perspective and good foreshadowing/inferencing. The ending didn’t leave me feeling satisfied and I didn’t really like the ending but it was a fantastic ending, plot-wise and well-written wise. This book however was different from most other WWII Holocaust books, instead of being from the point of view from a Jew or Soldier or Gypsy, it was from a German kid and from a Germans point of view, which adds insight to how Germans thought of what was happening, their perspective and how ignorant they were to what really was happening. Though to answer if I liked it or not, I guess I would be the “pink elephant on the fence”, or basically I don’t like it nor hate it.

Let me start off this review by stating a simple fact about me. Whenever possible, I generally watch the movie before I read the book. This is because I feel that it's the best way to get the best of both worlds. In the past, when reading the book... more
