is this a good book?
This was one of my favourite books when I was growing up. Great depiction dogs and wild animals and fantastic descriptions of the land up North. Many years later I had a chance t travel up there and see the little cabin in Dawson City (where Jack London lived for a bit) and the spirit of the wild is still there! You should definitely try White Fang after you finish with this one.
I read The Call of the Wild as a kid, but I had forgotten how truly wonderful a story it is, and Jack London was a gifted writer-spectacular imagery. He cleverly describes the Yukon, the people, the way of life (dog-mushing), survival, etc. through the mind of a dog, Buck. The sensibilities and practicalities of survival in a harsh environment are eloquently interpreted through Buck's point of view. I highly recommend this story. For me, it was an escape from the usual emotionally heavy contemporary books that I usually read.
