Description

The Girl You Left Behind is a hauntingly romantic and utterly irresistible new weepy from Jojo Moyes, author of the Richard and Judy bestseller, Me Before You.

What happened to the girl you left behind?

France, 1916. Sophie Lefevre must keep her family safe whilst her adored husband Edouard fights at the front. When she is ordered to serve the German officers who descend on her hotel each evening, her home becomes riven by fierce tensions. And from the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie's portrait - painted by Edouard - a dangerous obsession is born, which will lead Sophie to make a dark and terrible decision.

Almost a century later, and Sophie's portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before he died. A chance encounter reveals the painting's true worth, and its troubled history. A history that is about to resurface and turn Liv's life upside down all over again . . .

In The Girl You Left Behind two young women, separated by a century, are united in their determination to fight for what they love most - whatever the cost.

Just finished this book. Really enjoyed it. Finished it in a couple of days. This was my 2nd book by this author, and will not be the last.

When the book 1st arrived wasn't sure about it as it was based on a war story but now I've finished I will definitely be looking into other similar books. Definitely worth a read.

Brilliant storyline with two strong protagonists. The time shifting works wonderfully with the reader wanting to know what happens to both Sophie and LIz . I was previously not one for novels which leaned towards historical storylines but I would give this a try if you have previously felt the same. I will definitely be reading more of Jojo Moyes novels.

Loved this book, strong characters from the start but there were times I disagreedwith their motives and actions and still empathised with them. Super twists and turns. This is a historical romance but with a time traveller twist as a painting,s provenance is disputed. The hisory and complexities of German occupied France are well written and fascinating, whilst the main characters are real and flawed. I will definately look for more by Jojo Moyes

A wonderful read; my first Jojo Moyes but definitely not the last. I was a little hesitant about the subject matter to begin with - the war and occupied France do little for me in terms of reading material - but I tried to put my biases aside for the duration. How glad I am that I did that.

Believable heroines and a sound plot, with twists right until the end, kept me reading late into the night and going to bed early just so I could pick the book up again.

I've only just come to the end and I miss the characters already.

Not a book you can skim read but the contents are such that you wouldn't want to do that anyway.

Highly recommended

This is the first Jojo Moyes book that I have read but I think I'll be reading more. I thought it was just going to be chic lit to start with, but it's definitely more than that. I've read quite a few books set in the war but not one that focuses on the life's of those in occupied France, and I have to say it has really made me want to read more about this era. All the characters in this book are believable and are still whirling around in my head but Sophie is definitely the character that has the most depth. It's the sort of book you want to finish but then feel disappointed when you're done, as you know you're going to miss them.

This book revolves around a painting 'The Girl You Left Behind' and how it connects two women living almost a century apart. In German-occupied France, 1916, Sophie Lefevre's artist husband has been sent to fight at the Front. His portrait of her hangs in her family's hotel. A constant reminder of their love, it gives her hope that they will be reunited. Sophie will do whatever it takes to ensure his safety.

In London, 2006, Liv is grieving for her husband who died suddenly 4 years previously. Her most precious possession is the portrait of a young woman he gave her shortly before his death. A chance encounter initiates a chain of events which leads to the discovery of the painting's tragic history and leads to Liv putting everything on the line to fight for what she loves most.

Will Sophie and her family survive the war and be reunited with their loved-ones? Will Liv be able to move on and find happiness once again? What is the truth of what really happened to the painting in the intervening years?

This is a fantastic book. Gripping and with plot twists right to the final pages, you will not be able to put it down. The attention to detail gives you the feeling that you are actually there, experiencing everything with the characters. Sophie and Liv are fantastic heroines. Completely believable, they are determined and strong whilst their flaws keep them entirely human.

If you have enjoyed Jojo’s previous books, you will love The Girl You Left Behind. If this is your first experience of her writing, you’re in for a treat. Intelligent and emotional it’s a story that will stay with you.

Wow, i have just this second finished this book, tears still in my eyes. It was fantastic, so emoitional im worn out from reading it, sometimes i was having to catch my breath.

It was like watching a film i could imagine everything so clearly, and didnt want to put it down, i love both parts of the story.

I think the best way to describe this book is captivating. I could read this book over and over.

I loved the caracters, and they all had so much depth. I will be telling everyone about this book i thought it was amazing.

I dont know if its just me but from time to time, the writing would be Liv said or Liv did then change to She said or She did which sometimes i thought it was a different person, only for a spilt second while my brain caught up.
