Description

In the world of the near future, who will control women's bodies? Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are only valued if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now . Unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once a scathing satire, a dire warning, and a literary tour de force.

I read this a while ago. I found it very powerful, and very disturbing.

I have been meaning to read this book for some time but have always put it off due to friends who read it for A Level complaining how it was no good. following some excellent reviews however from podcasts I listen to I decided to push aside my hesitance and go for it and boy am I glad. This book was one of the best I have read this year. Perhaps I will now try another of Margaret Atwood's novels... Any recommendations?

This book was given to me by a friend for my birthday nearly 20 years ago and was my introduction to the fabulous Margaret Atwood. I have recently reread it and the writing is as fresh and current today as it was then. I heartily recommend this book to everyone.

It was just creepy... This is the third Atwood book I've read and so far, all three have given me the creeps. Each of them has been so dark and hopeless. So near and yet, so far away from the reality / truth. Atwood weaves such a story that both... more
