Description

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters addressed ominously to 'My dear and unfortunate successor'. Her discovery plunges her into a world she never dreamed of - a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an evil hidden in the depths of history. In those few quiet moments, she unwittingly assumes a quest she will discover is her birthright - a hunt for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the Dracula myth. Deciphering obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions, and evading terrifying adversaries, one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions - a captivating tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful - and utterly unforgettable.

Loved Bram Stoker's Dracula and thoroughly enjoyed The Historian. Kostova has done justice to the original Dracula and the whole classic gothic genre.

Lady Luck

This tale is written the old fashioned way but it's a new take on Dracula. A young woman discovers an ancient book and a labyrinth of secrets involving her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connected to evil hidden in the depths of history. To quote the Observer "A spirited update of Bram Stocker's classic, with a vastly ingenious plot in which Dracula has developed a mysterious penchant for librarians. Kostova is a whiz at storytelling and narrative pace". There are 704 pages and I... more

this book is awesome!! I love the how she incoporate Vlad, and stuck to him as the man according to bramstroker's character. The book didjustice to gothic stories, and dark humor. The ending was great. I really enjoyed thisbook.

Not only does this book give vald a history, it defines te whole "gothic lore " to vampires as deserved insad of painting them up into some romanatic creature.

I finished The Historian. I listened to it because my mom said it was a good vampire book and we listened to it in the car. It is a vampire book but not a new one. It is a book that is like a schoolbook. Parts of it are about a girl and her dad and those parts are good and then the girl goes on a hunt when he dad goes missing and she finds this secret book that she was not supposed to find.

Then she finds out even more secrets and some are cool but most of the book is a long description of a... more

This is such a superbly constructed novel, the framework being told by the narrator, never named, but the majority of the book in epistolary form through the letters and journals of her father and her father's professor, with some additional letters from her mother. It perhaps this, along with the pacing, which gives the book a slightly old-fashioned feel, but this certainly isn't a cause for complaint. The way that the narrator reads something in her father's journal that he has discovered in a... more

Wonderfully put, Mimsy! hopefully the joy of slow n easy is being rediscovered - with the Slow Food movement, etc. I almost contrasted the Historian to the jump-cuts of the MTV generation, then realised i was in danger of sounding like an old curmudgeon ;D

Hey everyone, Im not on here too often because school is keeping me very busy! Im working on my BA right now and the work is never ending. Well I thought I would make a book suggestion. I see a lot of people love the Twilight books, I tried to read them and I just couldnt do the soap opera vampire stuff, but my opinion is biased we all like different things. If you like vampires however, there is a great book out called The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava. It is probably a top ten favorite of m... more

The first part is slow, you have to pay attention though cuz the character developement through this part is huge. A lot of the details from the beginning come back in the end. Once you get maybe a third of the way in, it becomes very intense

I agree, this is a fantastic story, well paced and it evokes "Vampire Country" so well that you can picture yourself there. I loved reading it and couldn't put it down. I also enjoy reading vampire stories and this one was, for me, excellent.

Love this book. Can read it over and over. I love vampires novels and this is one of the best. Definitely a must for vampires fans. The writing is riveting, you are taken on a journey through different countries hunting down a girl's Father. Brilliant, my words don't do it justice

This novel has a wonderful plot and is a great travelogue, describing in vivid detail Istanbul and parts of Central Europe, such as Romania and Budapest. Very exotic.
