Description

My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer. This is Susie Salmon. Watching from heaven, Susie sees her happy suburban family devastated by her death, isolated even from one another as they each try to cope with their terrible loss alone. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet."The Lovely Bones" is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting - but, above all, about finding light in the darkest of places. 'Spare, beautiful and brutal prose ..."The Lovely Bones" is compulsive enough to read in a single sitting, brilliantly intelligent, elegantly constructed and ultimately intriguing' - "The Times". 'Moving and compelling ...It will put an imperceptible but stealthily insistent hold on you.
I sat down in the morning to read the first couple of pages; five hours later, I was still there, book in hand, transfixed' - Maggie O'Farrell, "Sunday Telegraph".

I thought the book was really good. She also has a memoir called Lucky that I thought was very well-written.

annaTRR commented:

I thought that Lucky was so much better than Lovely Bones. It is a memoir detailing her real experience which was pretty horrific but she described it in an amazing way. One of the most powerful memoirs I have ever read.

I loved the movie. I watched it by myself and I cried at the end, my mother watched it by herself and she didn't cry at the end. :( I loved this book too. Out of my favorites this one would be my all time favorite.

I loved this book but I have put off watching the film as the films are often not always as good as the books.

I read this book ages ago and have just seen the movie, they're both great :)

I found this novel 3-4 years ago in a booksale and right away the cover caught my attention. Sure enough the story was uplifting and really made me realize the tragedies that one can face and how the death of one child can tear apart a family. Alice writes from the protagonists point of view and really emphasizes that pain she is going through and never being able to live the long life she should have had.

i have read this book twice now, and i have also seen the film, unfortunately as with most movies i was glad that i had read the book first ,this book is so moving , and at times harrowing as you are moving through each stage with sisie and her family as they all go through all the emotions possible for anyone to experience,i dont think i have read a book like this before or since and i highly reccomend it.

This book is a stupendus (sorry if I spelled that wrong) pece of written literature. It is one of my favourite books because of how detailed and explicit and realistic it is. This book is enjoyable because you can vividly picture what is happening in your head.

I loved this book. There were parts in it that gave me the chills and other parts where I wanted to shout at the person "not to do it". It was a great story although the end was disappointing. Great read.

I did not care for this book at all. I hardly ever watch a movie before I've read the book and my mother has been bugging me to watch the movie with her and I was severely disappointed. Some parts were just strange and it seemed like the author didn't even know what she was talking about. The only parts I liked were the beginning and the ending, the middle was just fluff nonsense. Waste of time...

I was apprehensive about reading this book as I thought it would be sad/depressing. However it was brilliantly handled around such a tragic event. Bit disappointed with the ending but all together was well worth the read.

I bought and read this book after watching the movie. I really enjoyed the movie, but after reading some reviews of it, some of which were not that favorable, I decided to read the novel. I loved it!! Its a quite beautiful book which is quite affecting at times with its depiction of love and loss. If you've seen the movie, I urge you to read the book. You wont regret it!

I read this shortly after my father in law died and both my mother in law and myself found great comfort from the book.

Yeah I found it quite frustrating at times when I wanted to shout out who it was, but the whole story was lovely.

It really made me think about the whole life after death senario

This book is one of my favorite books because it is such a well written piece of literature. This book is so daunting because the disturbing subject matter, but because of it's brilliance it consumes you, and you will not want to put this down until it's done.
