Description

New official film tie-in edtion of this magnificent tale of rivalry and jealousy set in the volatile court of King Henry VIII. The Boleyn family is keen to rise through the ranks of society, and what better way than to place their most beautiful young woman at court? But Mary becomes the king's mistress at a time of change. He needs his personal pleasures, but he also needs an heir. The unthinkable happens and the course of English history is irrevocably altered. For the women at the heart of the storm, they have only one weapon; and when it's no longer enough to be the mistress, Mary must groom her younger sister in the ways of pleasing the king. Now this bestselling novel is brought to life as a major film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as the Boleyn sisters and Eric Bana as Henry VIII. The cast also features Kristin Scott Thomas and Mark Rylance. Directed by highly acclaimed Justin Chadwick (BAFTA and Emmy nominated for 'Bleak House') with screenplay by Peter Morgan (Oscar nominated for 'The Queen'; BAFTA winner for 'The Last King of Scotland').

This was a gripping read, full of intrigue and complexity. The characters are based on real figures in history, but this is not a book of dry facts. It is more like a soap opera, but much better written! Philippa Gregory has researched her subject thoroughly, but has used her powers of imagination and empathy to give her characters depth. The motivations of each character and the underlying factors that drive them are explored and the emotional life of each key figure is very believable. Henry is portrayed as a spoilt and dangerously powerful tyrant, but also as a vulnerable man, terrified of his mortality and obsessed with obtaining an heir. Anne is portrayed as manipulative and ruthless, but also intelligent, high spirited and deeply attached to her siblings. I was sorry for her plight, even though I was angry at the way she treated her sister Mary and others. The author has the ability to make you feel for each of her characters and to care about their fate. I was sorry to reach the end of this novel. I must read some more by this author.

I have to say I do not write reviews usually. This book has been on my bookshelf for awhile. I have seen the movie and it was OK so I as not really anxious to read the book. I hate to say I left this book for so long. It is not at all like the movie. As a matter of fact the movie would have been much better if it had followed the book much more. This book follows the relationship of Mary and Anne with Henry The VIII. Ms. Gregory has a new fan in me as she kept this fictionalized account moving a... more

I wasnt sure about this book when i borrowed it from the library but i couldnt put it down. I liked the way the book was written and the story got me hook line and sinker!! I liked the idea that it had its roots in real history and it gave me a new respect for how far women have come.
