Description

This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. His disappearances are spontaneous and his experiences are alternately harrowing and amusing. The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's passionate love for each other with grace and humour. Their struggle to lead normal lives in the face of a force they can neither prevent nor control is intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

A great idea for a book, but it was far too long. Some passages seemed to be just an exercise in "what quirky thing can I make happen to my character now?" without actually progressing the story - yes, we get it already, time travel is weird! And yes, we find out several times that Henry can bring knowledge of future happenings back to the past, so the reference to 9/11, where they're just watching TV waiting for it to happen, was simply offensive.

So overall, rather a disappointment

What a disappointing book this turned out to be. It's a standard romance novel with a bit of wackiness thrown in. Sadly the characters of Henry and Clare are not entirely loveable and are one-dimensional even when they are going through horrendous situations. Sure, it did have some nice twists and turns but I found myself skipping bits which appeared to be filling and not back story. In short, I don't think this is a memorable novel and I won't be rushing out to buy her next book.

I loved the idea of a time traveller and the problems it would pose; very intriguing, so overall I enjoyed the book - novel in both senses! I started watching the film but didn't feel it translated well (mind you, I always think books are better), as so much was in your imagination it was difficult to portray.

I really enjoyed this book, if only for the fact that it was a refreshing change from the predictable love stories that are usually recommended to me by friends and family. The story played out beautifully, but in a way that didn't always go in the direction with what I expected or wanted. Throughout the book you can feel that there is a climax building somewhere and you don't know quite what it will be, but you know that it won't be the happy ending that you would like.

If the characters feel dull during their time together, you know that it's because they are striving for the normalcy and stability that they are so desperate to have on a permanent basis; you felt all the more for them when, once again, Henry is pulled away to one of the times and places he ends up in.

I so agree with you biggles, I gave up reading it in the end as I don't want to waste my time on a boring novel when I've already got a full bookcase with books I really want to read. I'm very interested in reading her second book Her Fearful Symmetry though, that sounds better. The plot was limited and I got bored going through his travels without anything interesting happening.

I've only read a few chapters and I would have given up if I weren't reading it at the same time as a friend and swapping notes. I could forgive it for being confusing because of the subject matter, but it's just not doing anything for me. There's barely a plot and the characters haven't grown on me.

The idea was there, the story was not. What a flat ending and to me the ending makes the book.

I have to say this book didn't live up to the hype for me. I quite enjoyed it, but the ending was very flat and disappointing. Some lovely images and I like the idea behind it, but only enough to give it 3.5 stars.

Wow! Just finished this book! Have to admit at first I was a little disappointed. I realised it was a book you couldnt read in your lunch time hour, you really need to give it the time it deserves! Once I got into it, I was absolutly mesmerized! What a beautiful, magical love story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I was recommended this book by a friends daughter. She sort of challanged me not to like it! I loved it! Its emotional and imaginative. I wont go on, but recommend it to anyone.

By the way, I saw the movie, not long after reading the book. Good movie, but can easily confuse!

i read this book in like 2 days. i'm a real bookworm. once i start a book i've got to finish it asap. plus i'm always incredibly bored.

julie- i understand what you mean, in the start it was confusing to jump back and forth, present/past/future, but it's a very good book.

seen the film but it's not as good as this book. i'd recommend it to anyone.

Loved it. Stick with it, don't agonise over the twists and turns, and you'll find it hugely rewarding in the end. Definitely haunting.

While I'm not sure I'd call this book "whimsical", as the description does, I did enjoy it. It's twisty, sometimes dark, sometimes painful, and very emotional. I loved it -- and the movie couldn't compare. Also, while I found it understandable from the first few pages, I loaned it to a friend who found it hard to keep track of what was going on when, so that seems to be a very individual-tasty aspect of the book.

This book made a massive impression on me! I never wanted it to end, and the book i read afterwards appeared dull and uninteresting - even though it would have been great at any other time! I know of others who were not able to get past the first 20 pages, but i am so glad i managed to!

I loved this book so much - it helped me on a really long car journey. It is a little confusing to start though and you have to pay attention to the dates and ages on the chapters - a really good read though.

A great book, but had a bit of a love-hate relationship with some of the characters.

Takes a few chapters to get into the back and forth style. Frustrating in some parts, but overall a good book and enjoyable ending.

The idea is fascinating, but I don't know if I enjoyed it or not. I certainly found it confusing, but to be honest, it is not a book I would read again.

I loved the movie and loved the book even more, maybe it was easier to get the gist of it, having seen the movie first, and of course the book has so much more in it than the movie.Even though I sort of knew the outcome i just wanted to keep on reading and reading this story.

This book was a disappointment from the very beginning. So many had recommended it that I opened it expecting to be taken up in its story. I was not. I wanted to believe but never for a minute saw it as anything but preposterous. Sorry.

A great book. its only confusing when you do not know how to follow the book. its great. The movie i do not recommend at all. It was okay. but the book is a must read. Even if you dont like sci fi mixed with a romance story this is an excetion.

This was a good book, a little confusing, but still one that is hard to put down. I watched the movie first, that way I won't be dissapointed by the movie, because it is never as good as the book and this one is the same way. I've tried doing it the other way around and found it was too difficult to do and actually enjoy the movie.

A hauntingly wonderful love story. Please persevere over the first confusing pages and once you're into it you are rewarded by the most beautiful read. I'm not even going to mention 'the film'!!!

Hi! I'm new here. I really enjoyed this book - I think I read it in two or three days over the Christmas break. It did require a suspension of belief, which at times, I found to be confusing. I agree that the movie didn't do it justice.

Not my thing, but if you love fantasy and romance rolled into one, then you'll love it. It was too unbelievable in parts and didn't move me as it clearly has others. However a very thoughtful, well written book that I would recommend. Not one that I decided to keep and read again though.

I like a good fantasy but this was way over the top. I couldn't get past the unbelievability of it plus it made me feel a bit uncomfortable with the relationship when he was an adult and she was a child.

I thought it was a really clever book, and I quite enjoyed it. I had high expectations as my friend read it and was in tears in parts. It never made me cry though. I didn't really feel any connection to the characters.

Also I thought there were one or two errors in the book which bugs me. I am going to watch the film soon, but it's not a book I would read again.
