Description

Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub. But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's. Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

I personally enjoyed this book the best and found the ones after the third book, The Mammoth Hunters, to be a bit slower. However, Earth's Children is a superb series of books written by Jean M Auel over 30 years. It follows the European prehistory life of Ayla who is basically the forerunner of modern humans. I was happy when book 6 The Land Of The Painted Caves was finally written because the caves still exist.

i was excited at first to read this book, to carry on reading about Ayla's life. However i have to say that i did skip a few paragraphs because i was getting a bit bored and i could not wait for Jondalar to meet Ayla. (Its amazing how your emotions get entwinned with the character.)

Overall, the book was a good read, but it seem a lot of it was based on descriptions of the environment, which was simply just driving me mad lol. But its a small price to pay when you get so engrossed with the actual story.
