Description

Clay Jenkins returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers 13 cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Bakerahis classmate and Crusha who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

Through Hannah and Claya's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

Despite hearing amazing reviews i'll be blunt about my opinion on this book; I found the main character overly dramatic and unrelateable. Perhaps I would have enjoyed reading this book if I could have connected to the main character but since I was annoyed with her thoughts and opinions I felt the plot dragged on I may even go as far as to say, it was boring. I felt it was a waste of my time, but I heard amazing reviews.

You know , i sort of have to agree. I liked the book and everything but it was slow getting to the point and they were a bit over dramatic.

This book was something of a spur of the moment choice for me. I was at Barnes N Noble and the book that I had originally planned to purchase wasn't available, so I picked this one up. The back cover summary sounded pretty good so I took it home - and was glad I did.

The order this book goes in is very clever and complicated. Jay Asher simultaneously tells us a story while also weaving us into it. The reader can almost hear Hannah's voice through the tapes, but is glad to not be in Clay's situation.

I have never read a book like this one before, and the intricacy and level of suspense kept me caught up until it ended. Although I didn't want Hannah to be gone, I understood the realness of it and it made me appreciate life and the people around me more.

Read this if you are looking for a touching and crafty pastime.

Thanks for the speedy response Reading Room but I'm still not clear about whether the competition is for a pitch or first 500 words. Lisa and Laura Roecker's blog says its first 500 words??? This might become clear when you post the updated T&Cs but also wondered about the entry form mentioned. Is there an entry form and does the entry need to be in PDF format? So many questions. Sorry.

So...this is not exactly a "light-hearted" book. Which--I'll confess--is why I actually waited a really long time to read it. I'd seen it. I knew about it. But I avoided it. NOT because I hadn't heard amazing things. But because, I have kind of a hard time with anything about suicide. Especially teen suicide. So I knew this book would be an especially tough read.

BUT...I kept hearing amazing thing upon amazing thing and finally realized: it's time. So I read it. And let me tell you, this book is worth every tear I cried while reading it.

Yes, it totally broke me--but in such a powerful way. It's the kind of book that stays with you, that makes you think about it long after you've finished the last page. I'm STILL thinking about it. And I will continue to think about it until I feel the need to reread it again (which has already happened once--and yes, I cried just as hard the second time).

But it's not just powerful and haunting. It's also incredibly well written. I tend to find most Contemporary novels a bit more slow than other books. But THIRTEEN REASONS WHY is almost impossible to put it down. I read it in one sitting, stopping only when I was crying too hard to read the words (which was a lot). And while the book didn't end the way I wished it would end--it ended the way it needed to end. It told Hannah's story exactly the way it should. With brutal, elegant, heart-breaking honesty.

Since it's been out for a while, I'm sure many of you have read it already. If you haven't--you need to. It's coming out in paperback soon, and in the not-so-distant future it will also be a movie (can't WAIT. Even though I'm sure I'll need a Costco-sized box of tissues to get through it).

Recorded confessions interspersed with observations. A conversation between a dead girl and the boy who might have loved her. THIRTEEN REASONS WHY wins the award for most clever format. Hands down. Let me back up. After a long absence from the Young Adult section in my local Barnes and Noble, I had no idea where to begin to find a good book. I couldn’t take one more book with a vampire on the cover. Where to turn?

Then I saw it. Whoever says you can’t judge a book by its cover has never seen the cover of Jay Asher’s THIRTEEN REASONS WHY. The heartbreaking image of a teenage girl sitting in solitary loneliness on a swing grabbed me. I read the book jacket. The premise pulled me in entirely. A girl commits suicide and leaves behind a series of cassette tapes explaining thirteen reasons why. I immediately planted myself in a chair, planning to read the first chapter to get a feel for the novel. Two and a half hours later, I closed the cover and realized I’d read a book I had yet to purchase.

After purchasing the book, I drove home with the novel and its characters still haunting me. When Clay Jensen receives a mysterious package with several cassette tapes, he is stunned to hear the voice of Hannah explaining why she killed herself. As Clay listens to the tapes, he relives the series of horrible things leading up to the tragedy. The issues presented in the novel are ones that teens deal with on a daily basis, and Jay Asher manages to make Hannah’s problems real for the reader. No one-dimensional character, Hannah flies off the page with her powerful voice, and Clay is her equal with his reactions to her revelations.

If you’ve forgotten the complexity of your teen years, instantly run out and purchase THIRTEEN REASONS WHY.

I found this book different from plenty of others that I've read. It openly discusses suicide and the reasons for it. With a two way narrative you could see the story from two points of view. If oyu like something different then this is definitely the book for you.
