Description

A woman with a murky past who kills herself—or was it murder? A spoiled kid awash in gambling debt who thinks he can beat the system. A lovely woman whose life is about to splinter into a thousand fragments. A professional shoplifting ring working for the Mob, racking up millions from stolen goods. A wandering husband, rich and ruthless. A dirty cop so entrenched on the force he is immune to exposure. A sinister gangster, conscienceless and brutal. A lonely widower mourning the death of his lover, desperate for answers, which may be worse than the pain of his loss. A private detective, Kinsey Millhone, whose thirty-eighth-birthday gift is a punch in the face that leaves her with two black eyes and a busted nose.

I have read and loved all novels in Sue Grafton's alphabet series, and this one also doesn't disappoint. Kinsey is her usual feisty self, with her wry and astute sense of humour, and all the other favourite characters make an appearance: Henry and his siblings and of course Rosie and her unforgettable cooking (which seems to have gotten worse, if that is at all possible). It is also nice to be reminded that not all that long ago investigating something meant going to the library instead of googling it - it's almost like time travel back to the 80's.

This was a light and enjoyable read. Sure, there were some loose ends and some weak points in the plot, and I'm still not sure were exactly the character of bored housewife Nora fits into the bigger scheme of things, but all in all I enjoyed the book from start to finish and am looking forward to reading W.

Recently I went back and re-read some early Sue Grafton Kinsey Millhone books. The characterisations are still as wonderful. The dialogue, the mannerisms, the insight into human nature are all spot-on. This includes Kinsey's own flawed personality which makes her so interesting. Sometimes the plot can be tedious but this series is more than alphabet based, its strong point is people power.
