Lady Luck commented:
Considering Wuthering Heights was published in1847 and Emily Brontë wrote it between December 1845 and July 1846, it is an excellent effort for a woman in that day and age, especially to get it accepted in such a male dominated society.

Oh absolutely, and it's only in more modern times that the book has been appreciated for what it is. It certainly wasn't well thought of when it was first released. It's one of those books that is actually quite hard to describe, but I think what captures so many people is the beautiful imagery and the wild passion, which you enjoy despite the characters and plot.

I found it difficult to get into as well but then it seems to grab you. I found the whole story to be very depressing though and each character had serious dark undertones. I usually prefer a story that is compelling and uplifting but Wuthering Heights just left me pondering the end story.

with slight spoilers:
.
In the late 18th century a man brings a gypsy orphan child back to his lonely house on the Yorkshire moors, much to the disgust of his young son and daughter, Hindley and Cathy, who were expecting presents from his travels. initially they both mistreat the foster child but Cathy develops a deep connection with the boy, who they call Heathcliff, and they play on the moors and get up to mischief together. when the father dies Hindley becomes master of the house and relegates Heathcliff to the status of servant, and mistreats him more now that his father isn't there to intervene.
.
The bond between Cathy and Heathcliff grows, until Cathy is taken into the nearby manor house, Thrushcross Grange after an injury, and becomes enchanted with the refined atmosphere and the spoilt children. On her return, she promises Heathcliff she'll never change but not long after he overhears her telling the maid, Nelly, that she could never marry Heathcliff and he runs away.
.
Heathcliff returns years later having made his fortune to find Cathy married to Edgar Linton, the son from Thrushcross Grange. Heathcliff goes about getting control of both houses to punish those who have wronged him, and their children.
